Total cost of ownership, not license fees
Magento's license is free and its real cost is $15–50k/year in hosting, security, and engineering. BigCommerce sits mid-market with SaaS simplicity but less ecosystem depth. Shopify Plus is $30k+/year in license plus builds.
The decisive number is engineering hours per feature. On that metric, Shopify's managed platform beats self-hosted Adobe Commerce for nearly every merchant under $50M.
Where Shopify wins outright
Speed-to-market, app ecosystem, checkout quality, and hiring. A senior Shopify developer is 3–5 times easier to find than a certified Magento engineer — and cheaper.
For DTC brands and most B2B catalogs, Shopify's OS 2.0 plus Plus features now covers what Magento used to own alone.
When Adobe Commerce still makes sense
Deep ERP entanglement, complex multi-site global deployments, and catalogs where every SKU has 200 configurable attributes may still justify Adobe's flexibility.
The caveat: you need an in-house team or a serious partner to carry it. If you do not have one, the license savings are an illusion.
BigCommerce's honest niche
BigCommerce suits mid-market merchants who want SaaS hands-off operation with more native multi-channel than Shopify — and who do not need Shopify's app depth or Plus checkout.
Its ceiling is real: ecosystem, talent pool, and checkout extensibility all lag Shopify's. It is a fine platform that rarely beats Shopify at the same price point.
The switching cost nobody prices
Replatforming costs 2–4 months of engineering plus real SEO risk. Before switching, list the features the current platform blocks — if the list is under five items, optimize instead.
If the list includes checkout control, headless needs, or platform stability fears, start the migration plan now — redirect maps take longer than builds.
