Every app is a script tax
Most Shopify apps inject JavaScript and CSS onto every page — including pages that never use their feature. Twenty-five apps mean twenty-five scripts on your checkout journey.
The tax compounds: each script blocks, measures, and listens. The storefront pays for features it does not use.
The usual suspects, by category
Popups and email capture, chat widgets, review widgets, upsell engines, and loyalty programs top the offender list — each injects sizable script on every page for a feature used on one.
This does not make these tools worthless. It makes them worth auditing: load them conditionally, and remove the ones whose conversion impact you cannot measure.
How to audit your script stack
Open Chrome DevTools on your top pages, record a load, and sort third-party scripts by size and blocking time. Every app's script carries its name. The audit takes an hour and reveals everything.
Then ask, for each offender: what does this app earn? If the answer is 'not sure,' that is your answer.
Replacing apps with custom code
When an app's script is the problem but its function is not, custom code fixes it: a review section in the theme, an upsell block in the cart drawer, a popup that only loads on exit intent.
Custom code runs only where it is needed. The migration typically pays back in one quarter of recovered conversion.
The discipline that keeps speed
Before installing any app: check its script footprint, its conditional-loading options, and its measured impact plan. Install on a policy, not on a whim.
Quarterly app reviews are a maintenance task, not a project. Stores that run them stay fast; stores that do not slowly become slow stores.
